Burton L. Bridges passed away peacefully on November 29, 2024 at the age of 93 years old. He was born in Americus, Georgia, on November 25, 1931 to Clyde and Berta Bridges. He graduated from Americus High School with numerous leadership and athletic roles. He was the captain of the varsity football team, basketball team, and baseball team. He attended Georgia Southwestern State University for one year before entering the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He enjoyed playing football with the U.S. Air Force on Okinawa Island. After he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force, he received his degree from the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After graduating from University of Georgia, he joined Proctor and Gamble before making his career with Chesebrough-Pond’s, later bought by Unilever. He was a district manager and regional manager for over 30 years. He was an active member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church where he held many jobs including Chairmen of the Administrative Board and Chairmen of the Building Committee for numerous buildings and the sanctuary that was built in 2002. He was a devoted member of the Timothy Sunday School Class and enjoyed numerous mission trips to Alaska and Mexico. After many years of serving on the board for Mountain Top Boys Home in north Georgia, he was made an honorary lifetime board member and awarded the Candler Budd Visionary Award. Burt was truly a servant leader. He has survived by his loving wife Mary Newell Rainey Bridges of 65 years. Daughters Beth Bridges Spencer (John); Mary Bridges Waters (Bill); Grandsons Jack Spencer, Bridges Spencer, Billy Waters, and Burt Waters; Brother Clyde Bridges Jr; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Peachtree Road United Methodist Church Local Outreach; 3180 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, Ga, 30305, or Mountain Top Boys Home; 65 Mountaintop Way, Sugar Valley, GA, 30746. A memorial service will be held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at 11:00 AM in the sanctuary.
