Healthy Sumter made a return visit to distribute fresh produce to the residents of Webster County.
120 fresh produce boxes were distributed to residents at the Webster County Extension Office. Each box contained a combination of collards (or cabbage), squash, peaches, tomatoes and peppers.

This event was part of Phoebe Sumter’s Healthy Sumter initiative to address Food Insecurity in Americus & Sumter County as well as neighboring counties. Other initiatives include eliminating Food Deserts by creating community gardens and teaching people how to create gardens at their own home. So far this year, 5,620 produce boxes have been distributed, over 56,000 pounds of produce, impacting more than 21,500 individuals.

Special thanks to Innovative Senior Solutions for being a major sponsor for this event. Innovative Team members Kayla Bowens, Whitney Kimbrough, Ailiyah Gilbert and Anthony Bowens Jr. were on hand for the event. Also, a special thanks to Farmer Fredo of Flint River Fresh and our dedicated team of volunteers from Webster County: Elaine Nealy, Arthur Britton, Clara Merritt, Terry Agerton, Wilfred Garrett, Ronnie Smith, Leola Colbert and Lucy Moses.

The next and final Community Fresh Produce Giveaway for 2024 is tomorrow, Saturday, December 14th @ 11 am at the Emergency Operations Center (formerly the National Guard Armory) in Americus.
