Former Mayor of Plains Boze Godwin expresses grief at the passing of former President Jimmy Carter

Former Mayor of Plains Boze Godwin expressed grief at the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. “President Carter was not only my friend. He’s a friend of everybody in town.” Godwin underscored how the whole town was mourning. “He was a part of our community, and he will be missed, not just by me, but everybody.” Godwin told how the ripple effect of his death was felt not just in Plains, but the entire County of Sumter. “He was a community-oriented person. He didn’t forget his friends, and he did everything that he could to help us.”

Godwin spoke of President Jimmy Carter’s decision to return to his hometown of Plains. “When he came here, he wanted to be home.” Godwin told how regardless of what position Carter held he; “never forgot where he came from.”

Godwin referred to Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter’s decision to be buried in Plains, so that tourists would continue to come to the town. “He could have been buried at the Carter Center, or even, I guess, the National Cemetery. But he chose here, and they did it specifically for our area.”

Godwin also told what he thought residents of Plains would remember the longest about Carter. “His personal friendship he had with people here.” Godwin restated the importance of Carter’s friendship. “He was just a personal friend, and I love him as such, and I’ll miss him as such.”
