Former President Jimmy Carter’s remains departed the Carter Center on January 7. Weather resulted in the departure ceremony shifting from 9:30 am to after 11 am.
Spectators from The Carter Center gathered over an hour in advance at the circle of flags, many wearing coats to ward off the bone chilling cold. The brisk wind caught the flags flying at half-staff as the crowd waited for the honor guard.
The band played Amazing Grace and Blessed Assurance as the casket was taken from The Carter Center. Mourners witnessed as the President’s casket was placed inside the hearse, observing a silent moment afterward. As the hearse left the circle of flags, spectators continued to observe the silence, a few with hands over their hearts. The funeral procession then departed for Dobbins Air Reserve Base, where the President’s remains traveled to Washington via Special Air Mission 39.
