Drug bust in Montezuma results in discovery of drugs at Macon State Prison

On January 27, 2025, Corporal/FTO Jalen Johnson conducted a traffic stop on a Grey in color Toyota Corolla at the intersection of Houston Street and Walnut Street Montezuma, Georgia for a taillight and searbelt violations.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the odor of Marijuana was emerging from the vehicle and Corporal/ FTO Johnson and Officer Avery Cruthirds conducted a search and found a large sum of drugs.
Steven Gross, age 32 of 231 Clay Circle, Sparta, Georgia 31087 was arrested on Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute, Possession of Marijuana, Seat belt and Taillight Violations and other charges are pending. The Montezuma Police Department is in the process of seizing the vehicle.
Officers were able to track Gross’ vehicle through the Montezuma Flock Camera Systems and learned that he had made a prison drop at Macon State Prison. Macon State Prison Authorities were notified and found the drugs on their property.
Chief Eric Finch of the Montezuma Police Department stated, “I want to personally thank Cpl./FTO Johnson and Officer Cruthirds for their dedication on keeping our roadways safe and following through to take these drugs off our streets.”
Gross was transported to Sumter County Sheriff Department in Americus, Georgia and a hold has been placed on him for an Outstanding Warrant from Baldwin County.
