As part of Black History Month, the Americus Visitor Center is offering its African-American Heritage Tour on two dates in February. The hourlong tour, aboard the Americus Street Trolley, will take place on Saturday, Feb. 8 and Saturday, Feb. 15. The tour begins at 10 a.m. at the Visitor Center, 101 W. Lamar St. downtown.
Cost is $10 per person. Space is limited, so tour takers are urged to get tickets early. Tickets are available for purchase inside the Americus Visitor Center; the day of the tour in person; or online on the Visit Americus Facebook page link for “Upcoming Events.”
Highlights include the old Americus Institute site on North Lee Street; Eastview Cemetery, where prominent residents including the Rev. Blind Pearly Brown are buried; Campbell Chapel AME Church; Americus Colored Hospital; Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church; Sumter County Courthouse; and other sites with links to Americus’ rich African-American history.
