Wildcats, Lady Wildcats fall to Hawkinsville

Wildcats drop to 3-10
Schley County’s Wildcats were defeated 55-73 by the Hawkinsville Red Devils on the basketball court on Jan. 6 in Hawkinsville. The Wildcats returned to Ellaville with an overall record of 3-10 and a region 4A record of 1-5. Hawkinsville is currently 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the region.
The Wildcats got a slow start after the tip-off, putting only six points on the board and giving up 22 to the Red Devils. Schley’s boys narrowed the deficit in the second stanza, outscoring the Red Devils 14-9 to bring the score to 20-31 going into half-time.
Schley continued to narrow the gap after the break, posting 20 points in the third frame and holding Hawkinsville to 16. The Wildcats’ shooters cooled off in the final frame, however, and the Red Devils heated up. Hawkinsville outscored the Wildcats 26-15, further deepening their lead until the final buzzer.
Schley senior Kevin Poole was named “Player of the Game” and led the Wildcats’ offense with 22 points, 12 of which came from behind the arc. Kyle Moore joined Poole in the double digits with 12 points. Tra Minter shot 86 percent from the free throw line, sinking six of seven attempts.
The Wildcats return to action on Jan. 9, facing the Marion County Eagles in Ellaville.
Schley’s girls had a tough time in their first match of the new year as well. The Lady Wildcats traveled to Hawkinsville on Jan. 6 as well, halling 38-65 to the Lady Red Devils.
The Lady Wildcats will face the Eagles in Ellaville on Jan. 9.
