Ellaville- Schley County Chamber of Commerce plans annual dinner meeting
The Ellaville-Schley County Chamber of Commerce has its annual Dinner Meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 29 in the Schley County High School Cafeteria
Tickets are $25/member and $30/non-member. Entertainment will be provided by Brother Billy Bob Bohannon, a Christian humorist, speaker, musician, song writer, poet and author.
So make plans to attend and buy your tickets at the Ellaville Floral and Gift Shop.
Happy birthday, John Greene
Everyone wants to wish John Greene a happy birthday on Jan. 28.
John was born in 1960, which makes him 55 this year. He is real active in many things here in our community. He is director for the Schley County Family Connection, and is a very active member in the Ellaville-Schley County Historical Society where he serves on some committees and is our special auctioneer for our yearly auction.
John has served as president of the Ellaville-Schley County Chamber of Commerce, and helps the community out in is so many ways from churches to the schools.
So when you see John this week, wish him a happy birthday .
Ellaville-Schley County Historical Society board meets
The Ellaville -Schley County Historical Society board held their first meeting of 2015 on Jan. 14 at the home of Nancy McMath Young.
Many topics were discussed, and plans were made for the coming year. There will be a big membership meeting March 7 when history is discussed, questions asked and much more. The Historical Society is planning on have a booth for Springtime Ellaville as well as entering a float in the parade. We will start working on updating our history book which is 35 years old. Please make plans on giving us your family history as well as any other information that you have.
Always remember when you join the Historical Society you’re joining us to preserve our history. All dues and donations are tax deductible. Please feel free to make any suggestions to us. If you have any questions feel free to call 937-2116.
Special birthday celebration is held
On Jan. 11, Hannah Greene celebrated her 19th birthday at the La Hacienda Mexican Restaurant in McDonough. Being that Hannah is a student at Georgia Tech, the family all met in McDonough to celebrate this special occasion.
Those that attended were John and Lisa Greene of Ellaville, Meredith Greene, Hannah Greene and Chris Bellew, all of Atlanta, Betty Jean Baugh of Yatesville, and Adrian Dawson and daughter Natalie Dawson of Thomaston.
A delicious meal was enjoyed as well as birthday presented presented to the honoree. Everyone enjoyed being together and to celebrate this special day with Hannah.
Schley Probate Judge swears in board members
Schley County Probate Judge Mitzi Way swore members of the Schley County Board of Commissioners and Board of Education into office on Jan. 7 in the Schley County Court Room.
The first two sworn in were the commissioners that were elected in November 2014: Dennis Jones and Douglas Jamieson. The other two, elected in November to the Board of Education, were John Patrick and Duane Montgomery.
Congratulations go out to these men for being elected to serve on both Boards.
Schley Family Connection accomplishes much in community
John Greene , Schley County Family Connection co-ordinator, announced the accomplishments of the Family Connection.
They continued to help support programs throughout the community that focused on leadership, academics, life skills, safety and prevention.
They held Family Connection meetings on a monthly basis and provided speakers on different topics.
They hosted the Award Luncheon to honor the valedictorian, salutatorian and STAR Student.
They provided supplies for Schley County 4-H and Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D.).
They provided a GED appreciation dinner for 13 GED graduates and their parents.
They provided car seats to over 600 Medicaid-eligible children in Schley County over the past six year.
They obtained a $6,000 grant from Flint Energies Foundation for SADD for high school grades 9-12.
They received a $2,000 grant from Weyerhaeuser for supplies and equipment for youth programs.
They assisted the Ellaville-Schley County Historical Society by establishing and maintaining a local website for all members as well as preparing e-mails and promotional media on special events.
They assisted The Church International in operation and promotion of the Second Food Harvest and SNAP programs which provide food to over 300 low-income residents on a monthly basis.
They supervised the Summer Cafe Food Program for Schley County sponsored by Feeding The Valley and United Way. The program served 600 meals for students through age 18 for a five-week period.
They provided school supplies to 250 low-income students.
They hosted a reception for our new Schley County School superintendent, Adam Hathaway and the new Middle and High School principal, Jim Langley.
They participated in Pinwheels for Prevention of Child Abuse in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention in the month of April. They gave a pinwheel and a prevention flyer to students in pre-K and kindergarten.
John works real hard through the Family Connections in many community projects.
