AMERICUS – On June 6, the Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department will host an introductory disc golf tournament at the Sumter County Recreation Complex on Highway 19. The sport of disc golf has been played since the mid-1980’s but has only recently started to become popular in this area.

In the game, players throw a variety of discs, trying to have them land in special baskets. Each hole has its own par, just like in regular golf, although the distances between the tee and the basket are measured in feet, not yards.

This special tournament, known as a Trilogy Challenge, provides participants with brand new discs which must be used to compete. This puts more experienced players on a more equal footing with novices, since nobody has ever played with these new discs, before. Prizes will be awarded in several divisions and each participant will receive an award. The public is invited to come out and play or cheer on the competitors!

Sumter County’s newest course, now just over a year old, was designed by locals Scott Burgess and David Parks. It surrounds the majority of the Rec Center and includes a variety of different challenges in its design. Hills, trees, and even some fences that surround the center’s other sports areas are integrated in the course to ensure that the experience is enjoyable and challenging for beginners as well as more experienced players.
