SMITHVILLE — Hugh “Buster” Dorsey Slaton Jr., 62, of Smithville, Ga., passed away at 12:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015, at his home. He was surrounded by his family when he went peacefully to heaven. Psalm 77:19 reflects his walk in faith in a life filled with family: “Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen.” Hugh was born on Dec. 29, 1952, in Americus, Ga., to Mr. and Mrs. Hugh D. Slaton Sr., and raised in DeSoto, Ga. He graduated in 1970 from Deerfield High School in Albany, Ga. He attended West Point Military Academy from 1970-1971. Hugh graduated from ABAC with an associate’s degree in English in 1973. Hugh was a very well respected employee at Georgia Southwestern State University for 28 years, working his way up to director of the Physical Plant. He was a Master 4-H’er and attended National Congress in 1967. He was also a Life Scout, and very active in Boy Scouts Troop 26 with all of his four sons. He shared his outstanding knowledge and wisdom of his southern heritage by visiting Civil War historical sites, as well as being a member Sons of Confederate Veterans. Yearly visits to the ocean at St. Simons with all of his family members kept them bonded in love. Love of national parks also rounded out his fascination with nature and the whole family enjoyed their times together. In his younger years, he enjoyed traveling extensively. Even to his last days, he enjoyed bird watching with his family.
Hugh is survived by his wife Hue Mai Slaton and her family. He is also survived by his six children with his former wife, Lorna M. Slaton: Karamet Smith and husband Andrew, Safa Slaton Smith and husband Michael, David Hugh Slaton, Izzuddin Stonewall Slaton, Halim Robert E. Lee Slaton and Hugh Dorsey Slaton III; grandson Carter Slaton Smith, granddaughter Summer Smith. He is also survived by his sister Sherry Cobb and husband David, his niece Mandy White and husband Jason, great-nephew Cody Cofty, as well as nephew Jimbo Varnum and wife Allison. He was preceded in death by his father Hugh Slaton Sr. and mother Willie Mae Slaton, an infant sister, and his grandson Cohen Smith. Hugh is also survived by a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and their extended families.
