PLAINS — Mr. Luther Alonzo Wise Jr., 93, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at Sumter Retirement Village in Plains.
Funeral services are planned for 1p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at Plains Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jimmy Hobbs and the Rev. Dean Slocumb officiating. Burial will follow in Lebanon Cemetery.
The family will receive friends between the hours of 6: and 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening, Dec. 8, at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St.
A native of Plains, Mr. Wise was born June 9, 1922, a son of the late Luther Alonzo Wise and Ella May Shirley Wise. He was a member of Plains Baptist Church and was retired after 30 years’ civil service at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, having achieved the rank of staff sergeant. He was a member of the 100th Bomb Group, flying missions as a gunner on the B-17 bomber. He flew two missions on D-Day. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with one Silver Star and one Bronze Star, and the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
Mr. Wise was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Elizabeth Slocumb Wise, and by a grandson, James Blanton.
Survivors include one son, Lonnie Morgan Wise (Annette) of Plains; two daughters: Shirley Ann Knapp (Marc) of Land O’Lakes, Fla., and Amy Elizabeth Wise of Plains; one brother, Billy Wise of Brunswick; three sisters: Sarah Harris of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Edna Mae Hendricks of Americus, and Betty Albritton of Americus; three grandchildren: Joseph Shawn Blanton (Alicia), Marc Christian Knapp (Ana), and Rebecca Nelson (Jake); four great-grandchildren: Ellis Blanton, Hollis Blanton, Renee Ann Blanton, and Clara Nelson; and several nieces and nephews.
