Raiders excel at Trinity Christian wrestling tourney

DUBLIN – On Jan. 9, Southland’s Varsity Wrestlers traveled to Trinity Christian School (Dublin) to compete in the school’s annual January wrestling tournament.
Teams attending included the host school, Trinity Christian, Westwood, Piedmont, Westfield, Bulloch, John Milledge, Robert Toombs, Creekside Christian, Community Christian, Pinewood Christian, Deerfield-Windsor, Tiftarea, Windsor Academy, First Presbyterian Christian, Terrell Academy, Gatewood, and Covenant Academy.
The Southland Raiders took second place in the tournament behind last year’s state champion, Bulloch Academy.
The Southland participants who finished as individual tournament champions were Cole Landreth in the 10-pound weight class, and Stephen Turton in the 182-pound weight class.
Terry Kennedy finished as tournament runner-up at 113 pounds.
Third-place finishers were Tanner Rundle at 120 pounds, Jordan Grinnell at 145 pounds, and Morgan Youngdale at 180 pounds.
Fourth-place finishers were Brent Allegood in the 120-pound division, and Brandon Revell at 170 pounds.
The Raiders have reached the midpoint of their season and now head into the homestretch before the region tournament, with two home matches over the next two weeks. Southland’s wrestlers will be competing in Americus on Jan. 14 and Jan. 19. The Raiders will travel to Albany on Jan. 21 to participate in a meet at Deerfield-Windsor before hitting the road on Jan. 26 to take on First Presbyterian Day School in Macon.
The region tournament is scheduled to take place on Jan. 28.
