Ellaville United Methodist Church Wesleyan Circle meets
On Jan. 4, the Ellaville United Methodist Church Wesleyan Circle held its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. in the Social Hall of the church.
President Sharon Wall called the meeting to order. After the business session, Sharon gave the program, “It’s What I Do.”
Hostess for the meeting was Jacquelyn Dillard. She served mini-brownies and coffee.
Those that were present were Brenda Phillips, Carlynn Kirby, Sharon Wall, Judy McClellon, Ann Gill, Elaine Barwick and the hostess.

The Justices hold celebrations
Vicki Justice said it’s just a celebrating time of the year for the Justice family — beginning in November for Thanksgiving, then Christmas, to be followed on Dec. 28 with Jason Justice’s birthday and blink — the year ends and the New Year is here followed with Brian Justice’s birthday on Jan. 5.
On New Year’s Day Wilbur and Vicki went to their cabin in North Georgia to meet her sister Iris and husband Joe Menendez of Greely, Colorado. Arriving on New Year’s Day, the two couples celebrated while visiting and traveling to areas of interest.
Danielle Goodin, Wilbur and Vicki’s granddaughter, is a student at Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland, Georgia, and she was able to join them on Saturday for some after-Christmas shopping at Premier Outlet Mall in Dawsonville, and on Sunday to Discover Mills in Lawrenceville.
They are always looking for a new adventure to dine and  they ate at a Thai restaurant in the Mall and enjoyed the spicy food.
While all were for fun and exciting things, the Justices say they are ready for a little routine back in their lives.
They returned home on Jan. 4 and celebrated Brian’s birthday the following day. They are all ready to sit down and rest awhile. There’s no place like home.

Wounded Warrior special hunt held in Schley County
This was the fourth year that the Rock Hill Hunting Preserve hosted 10 hunters from the Wounded Warrior Project. The annual Wounded Warrior Hunt was held Dec. 4-6.
They arrived on Friday  afternoon  in time  to sight their rifles and hunt that afternoon.
After returning  from the hunt they enjoyed a meal and fellowship with a great group of people.
Saturday morning they hunted early to be able to return to the camp by mid-morning for a delicious meal. Saturday afternoon they hunted again ending up with a total of 15 deer from three  hunts. When they returned to camp Saturday evening they all enjoyed a Low Country Boil (shrimp, crab legs, corn, potatoes, sausage) and a lot of great desserts.
The hunters were Felipe Chaub, Francois Agustin, Brannon Hudson, Jimenez Ernesto, Amanda Marr, Clifford Morcy, Joshua Petty, Brandon Thomas, Andy Berg and Juan Cruz. All of these hunters were combat wounded veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.
The hunt was sponsored by Thomas Edwin Wall Post 191 American Legion of Ellaville, Harvey’s of  Americus, Hart’s Farms, the Schley County Board of Commissioners and the City of Ellaville. Douglas Jamieson should be recognized as he  is in charge of this special hunt each year.
A special thank you to Rusty and Mary Taylor for allowing  this  great hunt for these wounded warriors each year and to all the volunteers (cooks, guides, cleaners, etc.) who come out each  year to make these hunts so special and successful.
Douglas said that he would be afraid to mention volunteers  because he may forget someone. He said they are discussing next year’s hunt now and looking forward to it.

Schley Health Department observes Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
Our Schley County Health Department Nurse Kristy Smith announces that January is Cervical Cancer Month.
There are five main types of cancer that affect a woman’s  reproductive organs: cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and vulvar. As a group they are referred to as gynecologic cancer.
There are many questions that can be answered like What is cervical cancer? Who gets cervical cancer? What are the systems? What raises a woman’s chance of getting cervical cancer? How do you prevent cervical cancer? What should you do if your doctor says you have cervical cancer?  Where can you find free or low-cost Pap test?
So if you have any of these questions about this disease and need to talk to someone before you see the doctor, go by the Schley County Health Department and talk with Kristy Smith and she can surely advise you on what to do for yourself. You may also call Kristy at 937-2208 from 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. each week day unless it’s a special holiday. Remember that Kristy there and she’s ready to help everyone.

Ellaville community saddened at death of local resident
The Ellaville community was saddened to have heard of the death of Marie McDuffie Giddens. She was well known person here, and had lived in Ellaville for years. Marie and her late husband Lawton Giddens owned the Giddens Funeral Home here in Ellaville.
Marie worked for Champion Home Builders  in the office for a long time and then she served as Schley County Probate Judge  and held this position until she retired.
She and her husband had two children, Danny Giddens and Ginger Giddens Eubanks.
She was a member of Ellaville Baptist Church where she was a very dedicated and active.
Our hearts go out to  her family.
