AMERICUS — Carroll “Tump” Edgar Purvis Jr., 81, of 103 Glennwood Drive, died Thursday, March 10, 2016, at Perfect Care. A native of Americus, he was born Aug. 6, 1934, the son of the late Carroll Edgar and Verna Mills Purvis Sr. Mr. Purvis was a salesman and member of First United Methodist Church. He was a Mason, a member of the National Guard and of the Ham Radio Club where he helped people in other countries get in touch with their families in the United States. He collected and showed vintage Mustangs and loved visiting with people and telling stories and jokes. Mr. Purvis had found an extended family that he loved at Perfect Care. He loved all of his family dearly.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. held Saturday, March 12, 2016, at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jerry A. Roe Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2016, at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel and at other ti, the home of Keith and Teresa Teasley, 492 Ga. Highway 49 North. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Phoebe Sumter Hospice, P. O. Box 1434, Americus GA 31709 or to First United Methodist Church, 200 S. Lee St., Americus GA 31709. Pallbearers included Rob Rush, Danny Purvis, Ben Purvis, Eddie Purvis, Carey Purvis, Nate Bateman, Matt Ledger and Riley Daniels.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Nell Welch Purvis of Americus; two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Keith Teasley of Americus, and Sheryl and Tuck Rush of Americus; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John Lee and Laverne Purvis of Americus, and Dan and Bernette Purvis of Hawkinsville; four grandchildren, Hope Teasley, Rob Rush, Hannah Teasley and Mary Nell Rush. He was preceded in death by a brother, Garrett Purvis.
