Dust off your bike and get ready for the Prison to Peanuts Bicycle Adventure, scheduled for Saturday, April 23, 2016. This annual ride is sponsored by Sumter Cycling, the River Valley Regional Commission, the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site (JCNHS), and the Andersonville Historic Site (ANHS).
Riders of various levels and abilities are encouraged to participate, as there are distances appropriate for all to enjoy the beautiful countryside and historical sites of Sumter County. This may be your first opportunity to visit these sites via bicycle, burning calories while enjoying the surroundings. Additionally, since this is a family friendly event, riding pace is either fast or slow… you decide. Everyone is welcome. But regardless of the distance or pace, all riders must wear a helmet.
The ride begins at Rees Park, located at 409 Elm Street in Americus. The annual Arts in the Park will also be taking place that day from 1:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., so you will have the opportunity to see local artists and enjoy live entertainment. Food vendors will be on site as well, so no need to go hungry that day.
Please note that those participating in the bike ride will receive a meal voucher as part of their registration.
Various distances are available: 12, 34, 65, and 105 miles. JCNHS will be a rest stop for all of the routes except the 12-mile loop through Americus. ANHS will host a rest stop for both the 65 and 100 mile routes along with stops in Ellaville, Smithville, and Leslie.
Onsite registration and check in will begin at 6:30 a.m. for the century ride which kicks off at 7:00 a.m.
The 34 and 65-mile rides begin at 8:00 a.m. followed by the 12-mile ride at 11:00 a.m. Riders for all distances are encouraged to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to their start time.
Registration includes a T-shirt, swag bag, snacks along the route, and a meal voucher.
