PLAINS, Ga. — Mr. John Henry McElroy, “Papa” to many, age 82, of 221 Walter St., Plains Ga., passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2016, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2016, n the chapel at Aldridge Funeral Services. The Rev. Raymond Smith will officiate. Interment will follow the services at Lebanon Cemetery in Plains, Ga. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, in the chapel at Aldridge Funeral Services and at other times, the residence of Bennie and Gwen Picquet at 115 Lawhorn Circle, Americus, Ga.
Mr. McElroy was born on July 3, 1933, in Tift County to the late Edgar Vernon McElroy and the late Mary McEntyre McElroy. He worked as a carpenter, construction worker and farmer. He was a member of Preston Baptist Church. Mr. McElroy will be remembered as a true family man who loved to spend time with his family and cherished the time they had together.
Mr. McElroy is survived by three daughters, Hilda J. McElroy of Plains, Ga., Marcia Roberts and her husband Stan of Preston, Ga., and Gwen Picquet and her husband Bennie of Americus, Ga.; and three sons, Charles McElroy and his wife Beth of Abbeville, Ala., Joe McElroy and his wife Marie of Leslie, Ga., and Andy McElroy of Albany, Ga. Grandchildren include: Joy Hernandez (Emilio), Mandy Butler (Brian), Kim Wright (Keith), Johnathan McElroy (Kassi), Ben Picquet (Ashley), Lindsay Picquet, Tiffany McElroy, Carole Wells (Justin), Chad McElroy (Crystal), Eric Gilbert, Brian Roberts, Daniel McElroy, and Josh McElroy (Rebecca). A number of great-grandchildren also survive.
Mr. McElroy is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Betty J. McElroy; and five sisters. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Building Fund at Eastside Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1896, Americus GA 31709, or a charity of one’s own choice.
