AMERICUS — Funeral services for Deacon Oscar Simpson Jr. of Americus, Ga., who passed on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, in the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Albany will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Friendship Baptist Church. The Rev. W. R. Campbell will officiate and burial will follow in Staley Memorial Gardens. The remains will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the services.
Deacon Oscar Douglas Simpson Jr. was born on Sept. 7, 1950, in Sumter County, Georgia, to the late Oscar Simpson Sr. and the late Mary Lou Hawkins. He was the second of four siblings and the only boy. He gave his life to the Lord at an early age and joined Mount Salem Baptist Church. There he worked diligently and served as chairman of the board of deacons for 42-plus years.
He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. Oscar retired in October 2007, after 33 years of service to Sumter EMC. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his oldest son, Kip Lanorris.
He leaves to mourn his passing two sons, Kelvin Lopez and friend, Stephanie Tyson and Kristopher Douglas (Emily) Simpson; two daughters, Cletittia Renae Yearby, and Tatotshia (Johnny) Grier;  three sisters, Esther Simpson, Nannette Denise Banks. and a loving and devoted sister and caregiver, Josephine Simpson; two devoted aunts, Josie M. Simpson and Ollie M. Simpson; cousins raised as sisters and brothers, Annie “Sue” (Thomas) Douglas, Mary Frances Hudson, Freda (David) Turner, Curtis Simpson, Alex B. Gant, James Simpson Jr., Oscar (Emma) Cooke; one daughter-in-law, Donna J. Simpson; four grandchildren, Chiquita Banks, Chelsea Hart, Terry B. Yearby Jr., and Cemone Scott, all of Americus, Ga.; and a host of nieces, nephews, including two devoted nephews, Derrick (Re’nee) King, and Gregory (Ruthie) King; devoted niece Crystal Hawkins; cousins other relatives and friends.
