Horace Walton Seymour Jr. died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016, at the age of 80.
Born on Sept. 9, 1935, in Plains, Georgia, he was the son of the late Horace W. Seymour Sr. and the late Kathryn Smith Seymour. He married Marjorie Elizabeth Self in 1956, in Atlanta, Georgia. They raised three children together, first in Americus, Georgia, and then in Roanoke, Virginia. He retired from working as a New York Life agent in Roanoke after Marjie’s death in 1995. After meeting Barbara Ann Briscoe, they married on Feb. 14, 2003, and settled in St. Augustine, Florida. In 2015, they moved to Lake City, Florida.
A graduate of Emory University, Horace managed the family business (feed store and family farm) in Americus and also served as Civil Defense director there. In 1970, he moved the family to Roanoke, Virginia where he worked for the non-profit Total Action for Progress (formerly Total Action Against Poverty) before becoming an insurance agent. He and Marjie were very active in the Republican Party of the state of Virginia, attending state and national conventions.
Horace was an avid ham radio operator and computer enthusiast, often spending much of his spare time throughout his life building radios, computers and other electronic equipment. A dedicated amateur historian, he was extremely interested in the family genealogy and loved to travel to historic locations both in the U.S. and abroad. His passion for history and his interest in sports were shared with his wife Barbara and the resulting excursions gave them many joyful memories. Building on the genealogical work started by his mother, he completed a detailed family tree, a project spanning decades.
A great raconteur, he was a marvelous conversationalist who could make people feel at ease immediately. His interests allowed him to engage in conversation with anyone on a wide variety of topics.
Horace is survived by his wife Barbara; his sons Horace (Sookkai) W. Seymour III, and John (Mary F.) W. Seymour; his daughter Elizabeth (Victor W. Brunsden) M. Seymour; grandchildren Melissa Melons Ormeno, Tammy Smith, Horace (Emily) W. Seymour IV, David Seymour, Brian C. Seymour and Mark A. Seymour; and his dogs Bruce and Kate.
