Charles E. Dews III: Sept. 26, 2016

COLUMBUS — Mr. Charles Edward “Charlie” Dews III, 73, of Buena Vista, passed away on Sept. 26, 2016, at St. Francis Hospital, Columbus. Visitation will be held on from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held on at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, in the chapel of Watson-Tante Funeral Home.  The Rev. Joy Wilson and the Rev. David Chapman will officiate and Mr. Richard McCorkle will speak the eulogy.  Burial will follow at Tazewell City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Richard McCorkle, Larry Bryant, Curt Welch, David Kelly Dews, Charles Edward Dews IV and Robert Blake Dews. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Hamrick, Bubber Birdsong, Julian Morgan, James R. “Bump” Welch, Ronnie Morgan, Mike McGlaun, Normal Royal and Bobby Dennis.

 

Mr. Dews or “Coach Dews,” as he was known by many, was born on April 20, 1943, in Edison, Ga., to the late Charles Edward Dews II and Wilma Holloway Dews. He was a member of Tazewell Methodist Church. Mr. Dews was a lifetime educator, having taught and coached in Donalsonville, Ga., Plains, Ga., and eventually coming to Marion County in 1968, where he would stay until his retirement in 2002. He was a sports fanatic, but mostly enjoyed University of Alabama football. Mr. Dews loved hunting and fishing and being outdoors.

 

Survivors include his wife, Sue Varner Dews of Buena Vista; two daughters, Deana Dews Powell and her husband, Todd of Buena Vista, and Chris Dews Cannon of Columbus, Ga.; a brother, Gene Dews and his wife, Mary Ann of Headland, Ala.; four grandchildren, Trent Miller, Taner Miller, Kerwin Cannon and Gracyn Cannon; and many other extended family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in memory of Coach Charlie Dews to the Marion County Lady Eagles Basketball Team or the Marion County Eagles Baseball Team, c/o 1950 Mill Pond Road, Buena Vista GA 31803.
