4-H Camp: Sumter County 4-H camp registration has begun. All 5th – 12th grade youth are invited to register for the 2017 Georgia 4-H camping season. Fifth & sixth graders will attend summer Cloverleaf Camp July 3-7 at Fortson 4-H Center in Hampton. 4-H’ers will enjoy a fun week of zip line and rock climbing wall, archery, canoeing, swimming, water games and sports. In addition, 4-H’ers will travel off-center to Stone Mountain Park, White Water Theme Park and Atlanta Motor Speedway. Scholarships, fundraisers, and payment plans are available. Other camps offered during the summer include Camp Jekyll for 7th & 8th graders June 5 – 9 and Senior Camp for high school students at Rock Eagle 4-H Center May 29 – June 2. Attention Solid Waste Generators: The City of Americus has implemented a fats, oils, and grease (FOG) program as directed in the city’s Commercial Pretreatment Ordinance. This program is an environmental program designed to protect the sanitary sewer system and wastewater treatment plants from commercial waste. Commercial waste is defined as nontoxic, nonhazardous liquid wastewater containing fats, oil, grease, and food scraps generated by a food operation or institutional food facility, and any oil waste residue produced from vehicle maintenance or car washing. Facilities that create this waste are called Commercial Waste Generators (CWG). Current Federal, state and local provisions mandates the City to address these issues. Board Retreat: The Sumter County Board of Commissioners has its annual retreat on beginning at 8 a.m. Feb.18 at the Bison Valley Lodge, 1085 Tallent Store Road, Americus. The retreat is open to the public.
Attention Farmers: A Weed Control Meeting for all crops is at 6 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Sumter County Agricultural Center, 127 William Bowen Pointe. A UGA specialist presens the program. Headstart Recruitment: Southwest Georgia Community Action Council Inc. is recruiting for Head Start/Early Head Start for the 2017-18 school year. This is a federally funded program designed to meet the needs of preschool children ages 0-5, pregnant women, and their families. Early Head Start students must be six weeks to three years old. There are no restrictions on the age for pregnant women. Head Start students must be three or four years old by Sept. 1, 2017. Onion Sale: Sumter County 4-H Club’s Vidalia Onion fundraiser has started. The proceeds will be used to provide programming and summer camp scholarships for youth in Sumter County. Ten-pound bags are $10 each. Place your order at the Sumter County Extension Office by April 24.

BioBlitz: From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 24 and 25, the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site hosts a BioBlitz. GriefShare: First Baptist Church offers a non-denominational video series and biblical concepts for healing after the death of a loved one. Led by caring people, participants are provided workbooks for personal study and receive encouragement through small-group discussion. Meetings are from 7-8:30 p.m. the first and third Mondays of each month. There is no cost and the meetings are open to anyone grieving the death of a loved one. Volunteers Needed: Learning for Everyone Inc. (LEAP) is seeking volunteers for its Mentor Partnership with the Sumter County School System. Volunteers will mentor children in the grades 3-9. Anonymous Crime Tipline: The Americus Police Department has an anonymous crime tip line 924-4102. Citizens can leave information for police about crime in their neighborhood or other areas. The calls are completely anonymous.
Faith Clinic: Sumter Faith Clinic is a non-profit organization directed at meeting the spiritual and health care needs of residents of Sumter County who do not have health insurance or an affordable means to health care. Services include basic, non-emergent medical care of acute conditions as well as treatment of some chronic conditions. Services are delivered by volunteers. The clinic is located at 127 S. Jackson St. next to First Presbyterian Church. Hours of operation are 6-9 p.m. Mondays and 1-5 p.m. Thursdays.

Water Restrictions: The City of Americus has implemented the following water restrictions, established by the State Environmental Protection Division. Outdoor water use for the purpose of planting, growing, managing, or maintaining ground cover, trees, shrubs, or other plants is allowed daily, but limited to between the hours of 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. Outdoor water use for any purposes other than watering of plants, such as power washing or residential car washing, is limited to an odd/even address watering schedule. Odd numbered addresses can water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Even numbered addresses are allowed to water on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
