Schley County 4-H member wins at livestock show

On Feb. 22-25, Katelyn Carney’s hard work paid off with a great award. After she spent many long hours training and grooming her two heifers, she was well rewarded at the Georgia Junior National Livestock Show in Perry at the Georgia National Fair and Agri-Center. She placed 3rd in showmanship. part of the judging more of the person showing the techniques.
She then placed 1st in her Shorthorn Class. She also placed 2nd in her Low Simmental Breed.
Katelyn did an excellent job in the livestock program representing Schley County.

Rawlins Art Gallery to have grand opening in downtown Ellaville

Today, Saturday, March 11, there will be a Grand Opening Ceremony at the new Rawlins Art Gallery from 3-6 p.m. in downtown Ellaville. The ribbon cutting at 3 p.m. for the new gallery being opened by Yorka Rawlins.
Yorka came to the United States in 1974, having lived in New York, New Jersey, and Florida before moving to Ellaville. Her plans are to offer the public art lessons at the Rawlins Art Gallery. She is also planning on publishing Rawlins Art Magazine that will feature the arts and cultures in Georgia.
She will be having a special introduction of the exhibitors today. Complimentary wine and tapas will be served. The gallery is a platform for established and talented artists from all over.
Some of the opening exhibitors are Salvador Flores, Tony Castillo, Jason Dean, Dave Rogers (sculpture), Luz Cardenas, Isadora Reimaos (illustration), Yorka Rawlins, Elizabeth Sanchez (photography), David Aquine, among others.
Yorka said she considers herself an eclectic artist and is not married to any subject, theme or style.
She invites everyone to the grand opening.

Ellaville Methodist Church holds Ash Wednesday service

On Wednesday, March 1, Ellaville United Methodist Church held its Ash Wednesday service.
The Rev. Jonathan Beckum opened with prayer before the message. This is one of the very important times of the year, knowing that the next big Christian celebration is Easter.

Schley County 4-H selling Vidalia onions

Schley County 4-H’ers are selling Vidalia onions to offset the cost for those attending camp this summer.
This year, the fifth and sixth graders will travel to Burton 4-H Center on Tybee Island for a week of fun, excitement, and adventure. There are a few openings if any local child would like to go.
Vidalia onions are $10 for a 10-lb. bag. Orders can be placed with the 4-H’ers that will be attending camp, or by calling the Schley County Extension Office 937-2116; ask for Brenda Welch. Deadline for orders is April 14 and the onions are expected to arrive the afternoon of May 11.

Mary Nan Pilcher travels to Florida

Mary Nan Pilcher went to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to visit with her daughter Cynthia Sanseverino and her family, husband Mike and daughters, Kayla and Sarah. The purpose of this special visit was to attend a dance competition that Sarah was to participate in, but so many of the Dance Team had the flu that their teacher pulled them from the competition.
Mary Nan said they had a good time anyway. They spent Friday at the beach. On Saturday, they dined out and attended the movies. On Sunday they went to church, and afterward visited a farmers’ market.
Mary Nan flew home on Monday.
