Lynell Oxford Hurt

Lynell “Nell” Oxford Hurt, 90, died Saturday, May 20, 2017 at her residence. She was preceded in death by husbands, Charles Calvin Oxford and Robert T. Hurt; son, David Oxford and step-son Charles Hurt; and 13 siblings. Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, May 22, 2017 in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Services with committal service following in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family received friends prior to the service Monday beginning at 1:00 P.M. at the funeral home.  Born in Laurens County, she was the youngest of 14 children born to the late Richard Thomas McMullan and Trotte Crawford Hansford McMullan.

Nell is survived by a son and wife, Calvin C. Oxford and Louise of Griffin, GA; step-sons and wives, Robert T. Hurt, Jr. and Glynnes, James and Laura Lee Hurt, Harry and Kay Hurt, all of Cordele, daughters-in-law, Mary Polly Oxford of Americus and Nina Hurt of Cordele; grandchildren Meg Oxford of Griffin, GA, Carson Oxford McQueen and husband Marc of Columbia, SC, Cal Oxford II and wife Alison of Atlanta, and Clay Oxford and Ashton Wages of Americus, GA; step-grandchildren Jimmy Hurt, Robert T. Hurt, III, William Hurt, Todd Hurt, Gina Hurt, Heather Sheppard, Bebe Hurt, Ruth Hurt, Sharon Reeves, Susan Sumner, Dana Ward, Virginia Duke; and many great grandchildren including Eme McQueen, Cal McQueen, Will McQueen, Isabella Oxford and Perry Oxford.  The family thanks her special friends Pam Potts and Johnnie Mae Merritt.

Nell worked at Christopher’s Furniture for many years. One of her biggest joys was volunteering for years with the Crisp Regional Hospital Auxiliary and was very proud to serve as the Auxiliary’s president.  She loved spending time on the lake and enjoyed sharing her many fish fries.  Nell delighted in traveling with family and friends. She was an active member of Cordele First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school class for ten years. The true joy in her life were her children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
