Southland cross country places five runners in top 10 at Valdosta meet

VALDOSTA – The Southland Academy Raiders and Lady Raiders cross country teams traveled to Valdosta on Aug. 19 to take part in the Winnersville XC meet.
Southland had five team members among the top-ten finishers in the meet.
Tanner Humphrey earned a fifth-place finish in the junior varsity (JV) boys’ division out of a total of 86 runners. Ashton Ray followed closely in the JV boys’ division, earning a seventh-place finish.
Southland’s Jadie Burrell took the first-place spot on the dais in the JV girls’ division out of 69 total runners, followed by Elizabeth Law, who took second place in the same division.
Ryliegh Bell finished in sixth place in the varsity girls’ division, which included 86 total runners.
In the team categories, the Southland varsity girls took second place overall out of 13 teams competing in the meet. The varsity boys finished in eighth place out of 13 teams.
Southland’s JV girls finished in third place out of seven competing teams and the JV boys earned a fourth-place finish out of seven teams that participated in the meet.
Following the races, Southland cross country coach, Ed Shattles, said, “It was a good start to our 2017 season”.
Southland’s cross country teams return to action on Aug. 26, traveling to Tallahassee, Fla. For the Godby Cougar Challenge, sponsored by Godby High School.
