The City Clerk is the official custodian of the city seal and responsible for maintaining accurate records of the proceedings of the City Council meetings and attends all meetings of the Mayor and Council.
You are encouraged to get to know your City Government. The City of Americus operates with a City Manager form of government who is tasked with the day to day operations of the departments of the City. The governmental body consists of a Mayor who is elected at large and six Council members who are elected by District. This governing body meets two times each month with their meetings being held at 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Public Safety Building. The meetings are always on the Thursday following the second Monday and the Thursday following the third Monday. The City of Americus encourages you to attend these meetings so that you may learn and understand the policies and ordinances of the City of Americus.
The Mayor and Council of the City of Americus appoint individuals from our community to serve on various boards and commissions. This is an excellent way to get involved in the policy making process of City Government. We currently have more than 80 volunteers serving on our board and commissions. There is an application process that can be obtained from the City Clerk.
August has been a busy month in the Office of the City Clerk. We welcomed our visitors from our Sister City, Miyoshi City, Japan. Planning such an event involves our entire community as this group consisted of 23 students and six adults who were entertained and toured all over Americus and Sumter County.
The City Clerk’s office also held qualifying for City Elections which happens every odd year. This year the citizens will be voting on a Mayor and three Council members in Districts 3, 4 and 5. If you do not know what district you live in, please contact the Clerk’s Office or our GIS Department to find out.
