AMERICUS — The Sumter County Schools recently hosted a district-wide Curriculum Night for attendees to learn more about Sumter County Schools and the courses available to students for the 2017-2018 school year.
Torrance Choates, Ed.D., superintendent of Sumter County Schools, welcomed the crowd for coming out. “It is encouraging to see so many people interested in their child’s education. Working together, we will achieve great things in Sumter County.”
Walter Knighton, associate superintendent for Sumter County Schools, presented a brief overview of the curriculum. The guest parent speaker, Marcus Arnett, a social entrepreneur, spoke on the value of parent contribution to the educational process. He encouraged the audience to set expectations — for students, teachers, schools and even for themselves. One expectation he encouraged everyone to set is to expect great efforts, and to understand that once the expectation is set, students will go the extra mile to achieve the goal. He also encouraged everyone to practice accountability, to simply hold people to what they say they are going to do. Finally, he urged all to continue to get better every day. The breakout sessions were led by the building principals and teachers.
“As the district family and community engagement coordinator, I was glad to welcome over 150 parents and students to our first district-wide Curriculum Night. The objective was for parents to learn more about Sumter County Schools and the courses available to students for the 2017-2018 school year,” Adrienne Davis, Ed.D., event coordinator.
After the sessions, a pizza dinner was served. Davis thanked John Davis, manager of the local Walmart, for providing paper products and chocolate chips. The Americus-Sumter High culinary arts students used the chips to bake cookies they also helped serve dinner.
