Wildcats take the lead in the ninth inning to defeat Crisp County

CORDELE – The Schley County Wildcats took the lead late in the game to earn themselves a 6-2 win over Crisp County on Tuesday, March 27, at Crisp County High School.

The score was tied 2-2 going into the top of the ninth. Garrett Peavy led off the inning with a single. Peavy then stole second, then Jordan Hall flew out for the first out of the inning. Lorne Barineau grounded out to second base, advancing Peavy to third. Then the Wildcats took the lead when Dylan Taylor singled, driving in Peavy. This was the beginning of a four-run inning that would put the game away for the Wildcats.

Ashton Goodin then singled past the shortstop Miles Napier, and Taylor advanced to second base. With runners at first and second with two outs, Cameron Belcher singled, driving in Taylor for the second run of the frame. The Wildcats had a 4-2 lead. Goodin advanced to third on Belcher’s single, giving the Wildcats a runner 90 feet away from home.

Trent Bivins then doubled to center field, driving in Goodin and advancing Belcher to third. This gave Schley County a 5-2 lead in the top of the ninth. Dylan Windham then hit a ground ball to second baseman Noah Walters. Walters couldn’t handle the ground ball, and Belcher scored on the error. Bivins advanced to third on the play as well. After Dakota Albritton lined out to left field for the third out of the inning, it was time for the Wildcats to close the deal in the bottom of the ninth.

Miles Napier led off the inning for the Cougars by striking out. Connor Richmond then struck out swinging for the second out. Then Jackson Napier flew out to Ashton Goodin to end the ball game.

Schley County scored six runs on 11 hits and committed one error, while Crisp County scored two runs on four hits and committed two errors.

Goodin had an excellent day at the plate for the Wildcats. He went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Cameron Belcher was also productive for Schley County. Belcher went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored two runs.

The Wildcats used four pitchers in this game. Trent Bivins started off the game on the mound. He went three innings, giving up one run on no hits, walking two and striking out five. Ashton Goodin came on in relief for Bivins. He worked three innings, giving up one run on three hits. He struck out four and walked none. Lorne Barineau came on in relief of Goodin. Barineau worked two innings. He gave up no runs on one hit. He struck out three and walked one. Dylan Taylor came on in relief of Barineau. Taylor worked an inning, giving up no runs, hits or walks and he struck out two batters.

Schley County improves to 13-2 overall and 7-1 in Region 4-1A. They will travel to Milledgeville on Thursday, April 5, to take on Georgia Military. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
