Federal Pell Grant returns to year-round status; now available to students for Summer 2018

AMERICUS — For the first time since 2011, the Federal Pell Grant has returned to year-round status and is available for use during summer semester. This change, which went into effect with the 2017-2018 award year, will allow eligible students to receive the full Federal Pell Grant for Summer 2018.
“It’s a win for students at Georgia Southwestern State University and across the nation,” said Director of Financial Aid Angela Bryant, Ph.D. “If students were full-time in fall and spring, and enroll and attend a minimum of six hours this summer, they may be eligible for ‘Year-Round Pell.’”
Summer Pell Grant availability provides students with the opportunity to expedite degree program competition. For many students, completing a degree program early often saves on tuition and fees and decreases possible student loan debt.
“Although students would be using their maximum Pell eligibility,” said Bryant, “grants do not have to be repaid. Eligible students should take advantage of the situation, submit a summer financial aid application, and register for summer classes.”
To apply for Summer Financial Aid, students should first register for their summer courses. After registration, students should submit a completed Summer Financial Aid application to the Office of Financial Aid. Those who do not have a current 2017-2018 FAFSA on file must submit a FAFSA before a summer application review can occur.
The deadline to request review for Summer 2018 financial aid is June 15.
Pell Grants are typically awarded to undergraduate students who have not yet earned a degree. For more information about the Federal Pell Grant, contact the Office of Financial Aid at (229) 928-1378 or visit finaid@gsw.edu.
