Several budding artists attended the Encourage and Build summer art camp at Southland Academy. Each camper created art pieces to represent Joan Mitchell, a Chicago- born abstract painter. Emulating the artist’s use of loosely applied horizontal and vertical strokes, the campers chose six colors and used short, choppy, vertical strokes to fill up the blank canvas. Kristy Swinson, Southland Academy Lower School art teacher, instructed the students to leave some white exposed on the canvas as the artist often did in her work. McGraw Minor displays her artwork from the camp program.
