Lady Raiders fall to Southwest Georgia Academy

DAMASCUS, GA – The Southland Academy Lady Raiders Softball Team (2-2) took it on the chin Tuesday, August 7, as they were defeated 9-1 by the Lady Warriors of Southwest Georgia Academy.

Southwest Georgia put the game away by scoring seven runs in the fifth inning. It was a pitchers’ dual throughout most of the game, with the score tied at 0-0 until the bottom of the fifth. That’s when SWGA did their damage. The Lady Warriors took advantage of seven errors committed by the Lady Raiders in this game.

Trailing 7-0 in the top of the sixth, Southland got on the board. With one out, Holly McCain singled. McCain then advanced to second on an error by the SWGA catcher. Sara Beth Storey then doubled to left field, scoring McCain for Southland’s only run of the game.

SWGA added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to salt away the victory.

The Lady Raiders used three pitchers in this game. Hannah Mitchell started on the mound for Southland. She pitched three and one-third innings. During her time on the hill, Mitchell allowed no runs and only one hit. She walked three batters and struck out none.

Mitchell was replaced by Rylan Youngdale. Youngdale pitched one and one-third innings, allowing seven runs on six hits. However, only three of those runs were earned. She walked none and struck out three.

Youngdale gave way to reliever Alli Dent. Dent pitched one-third of an inning, allowing two runs on three hits. One of those runs was earned. SWGA scored a total of nine runs on 10 hits and committed two errors. Southland scored one run on four hits, but committed seven errors. Morgan Minick had the best day at the plate for Southland. She went 2-for-2. Holly McCain and Sara Beth Storey each got a hit. Storey was able to drive in one run when she doubled to score McCain in the top of the sixth.

Mary Mac Cooper led Southwest Georgia’s offensive attach by going 2-for-4 at the plate. She scored two runs and drove in two RBIs. Karsyn Carver also went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Kamryn Carver went 1-for-3 at the plate, scoring a run and driving in two RBIs. The Lady Warriors’ Annalee Lockhart also did some damage to Southland. Lockhart went 2-for-3, scoring a run and driving in another.

Karsyn Carver pitched the entire game for SWGA. Carver gave up one run on four hits. She walked none and struck out five Southland batters.

The Lady Raiders will try to get back into the win column when they host Westwood on Thursday, August 9. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
