HAWKINSVILLE – With a runner on first and nobody out in the top of the eighth inning, Schley County pitcher Saige Whaley doubled to left field, scoring Emily Campbell to give the Lady Wildcats a 4-3 lead. That would be enough as Schley County was able to hold on and win the extra-inning battle 4-3. This game took place on Thursday, August 23, at Hawkinsville High School.

In the bottom of the eighth, Ashanti Edwards led off with a single to give the Red Devils a base runner. After the next batter popped out, Edwards had left first base, but was thrown out trying to get back. That proved to be a huge second out because Nadia Sloan tripled, putting the tying run at third for Hawkinsville with two outs. Fortunately for the Lady Wildcats, Kristen Wolters flew out to Jade Sellars for the final out, giving the Lady Wildcats the 4-3 win.

Whaley got the hard-fought win for Schley County, pitching the entire game. She gave up three runs on seven hits. One of those runs was earned. She walked eight and struck out six.

Emily Campbell and Carmen Phillips each went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored a run. Saige Whaley went 2-for-3, scored a run and drove in two RBIs, including the winning run in the eighth. Nyiah Kelley went 1-for-4 and drove in two RBIs.

Ashanti Edwards led Hawkinsville’s offensive attack. She went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs.

Hawkinsville starting pitcher Danielle Powers took the loss, though she pitched well. Powers gave up four runs on 12 hits. All four runs were earned. She walked one and struck out six.

The Lady Wildcats are now 5-1 overall and 2-0 in region play. They continue region play on Tuesday, August 28, as they host a tough Marion County squad. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
