GSW Men’s soccer loses season opener to Warner University

LAKE WALES, FLA – The Georgia Southwestern State university men’s soccer team opened their 2018 season on the road losing 3-1 to Warner University Thursday Evening, August 30, at Royals Field.

Jake Baker put Warner on the board early in the seventh minute of the match. However, GSW senior transfer Matheus Alves took a pass from junior Dylan Marshall in the 12th minute and scored to tie the game at 1-1.

Warner regained the lead in the 36th minute when Widler Monestime found the back of the net. GSW continued to put pressure on the Warner back line, but were unable to come up with another goal.

The Royals got an insurance goal from Austin Steen in the 87th minute to seal the victory. Warner improves to 4-0, their best start in school history.

The Hurricanes were evenly-matched statistically with the Royals. Both sides had seven shots on goal. Warner had one more corner kick than the Hurricanes (8-7) and committed two more fouls (13-11). GSW goalkeeper Francesco Bazzano had four saves in his debut with the Hurricanes. Warner goalkeeper Angelo Neto tallied six saves for the Royals.

The Hurricanes continue their Florida swing when they travel to Babson Park to take on Webber International university for their first-ever meeting with the Warriors. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, September 1, at 10 a.m.
