MORROW, GA – The Georgia Southwestern State University Women’s Soccer Team lost 4-1 to the Clayton State Lakers on Wednesday night, September 19, at Clayton State University.

GSW falls to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the Peach Belt Conference. Clayton State improves to 3-0-2 overall and 1-0 in the PBC.

Things started off well for the Lady Hurricanes as senior forward Ella Hawkins scored the first goal of the match. Playing from the far-right side of the field, freshman forward Emily Colum played the ball to Hawkins, who sent a soft shot over the Clayton State goalkeeper’s head to give GSW a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of the match. However, that would be all the offense the Lady Hurricanes could muster as they only took three more shots after that.

Clayton State wasn’t down for long. The Lakers scored in the 21st minute when Jane McKevitt sent a high ball over GSW goalkeeper Victoria Moore’s hands and into the net to tie the score at 1-1. The Lakers took the lead in the 41st minute when Ann-Catherine Zabel scored to give Clayton State a 2-1 lead at halftime.

For much of the second half, GSW was able to hold the Lakers to their 2-1 advantage. However, in the 77th minute, Manoly Baquerizo scored to give Clayton State a 3-1 lead. Seven minutes later, Marie Devillers took a free shot from the top of the box that hit the back of the net, securing the 4-1 win for the Lakers.

The Lady Hurricanes continue their road schedule. They travel to Milledgeville, GA to take on Peach Belt Conference opponent Georgia College on Saturday, September 22. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
