The Americus-Sumter High ‘SkillsUSA’ Automotive Club recently held its bi-annual Boston butt fundraiser. Instructor Fred Mohl, with help from his students, smoked more than 200 Boston butts in large grills on the rear lawn of the school. The fundraiser is held twice each year to defray travel costs for ASHS students who compete in the national engine building championship in Las Vegas every November. The cooking day typically starts at 3 a.m. with the prepping of 10 large smoker-grills, and continues until well after sundown. Shown here, Americus-Sumter High Automotive instructor Fred Mohl, at left, and Cahlin White monitor preparation of an outdoor grill to be used during a recent SkillsUSA fundraiser held at the school. Money earned from the cookout will be used to fund a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada, where the ASHS engine building team will compete against leading schools from around the nation.
