AMERICUS – The Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department (SCPRD) youth basketball program had two all-star boys basketball teams win their Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) District 3 tournaments. Both the 10u and 12u boys’ teams claimed their district championships on Saturday, February 22. As a result, they both qualify for the GRPA 10u and 12u state tournaments.
The 10u boys’ team, coached by Dwight Harris, defeated Thomasville and the 12u boys’ team defeated Tift County. The state tournaments are this Friday and Saturday, March 1-2. The 10u boys’ all-star team will travel to Carrollton, GA to compete in their age group’s state tournament. The 12u boys’ all-star team, coached by Ernest Scott, will travel to Chatsworth, GA to compete in the GRPA state tournament for that age group.
The Sumter County 10u boys’ team got to this point by beating Thomasville 38-22 in the championship game of the GRPA District 3 10u Tournament. The 12u boys’ team defeated Tift County 53-48 to win the 12u District 3 Tournament. “The real opportunity for success lies within the kids and how hard they work as a team to achieve a common goal,” 12u boys’ head coach Ernest Scott said. “The kids played hard to win their district and deserve the right to compete at state. Our job is to create a positive environment, to have fun teaching and hope they are learning the game of basketball. As a coach, I represent SCPRD as a positive role model for the kids, parents and all who come to enjoy our sport.”
The 10u boys’ team will head to Carrollton, GA on Friday, March 1, to compete in the 10u GRPA State Tournament at the East Carrollton Community Center. Their first opponent will be the Habersham County 10u All-Stars. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on Friday.
The 12u boys’ team will travel to Chatsworth, GA to compete in the 12u GRPA State Tournament. Their first opponent will be the Hapeville 12u All-Stars. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Murray County Recreational Center.
