AMERICUS — Lawrence Lee “Jack” Short Sr., 89, of Americus died very unexpectedly late Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 30 at Hebron Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ron Perry and Dr. Jimmy Melvin officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. on Friday evening, March 29, at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St.

A native of Sumter County, Mr. Short was the son of the late Clarence Belvy Short and Ruth Lee Turner Short. He was a 1946 graduate of Plains High School and served in the Georgia National Guard, from which he received an honorable discharge. He was a retired farmer and cattleman who was a friend to all. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Short had been a faithful member of Hebron Baptist Church for nearly 75 years, having been baptized there on Aug. 27, 1944. He was a former deacon and choir member at Hebron.

He and his wife, Frances Spann Short, celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary earlier this year.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Anne Short, on Aug. 24, 2015.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Spann Short; three sons, L.L. “Jackie” Short Jr. of Pensacola, Fla., Randy Short of Plains, and Steve C. Short of Americus; two sisters, Peggy S. Israel (Harold) of Smithville and Patsy S. Medlock (Pat) of Plains; a brother, C.W. “Bobo” Short (Nancy) of Americus; four grandchildren, Shane Short (Paige) of Bogart, Brian Short (Ginny) of Cumming, Erica Short of Americus, and Jake Short of Plains; five great-grandchildren, Katherine Short, Gracie Short, Landry Short, Christian Short, and Madeline Short; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be mailed in Mr. Short’s honor to Hebron Baptist Church, 1951 Ga. Highway 49 S., Americus GA 31719.
