Our opinion: Love and honor to mothers

Sunday is Mothers’ Day and children all over the nation, young and not so young, will be honoring their mothers. It’s a day to thank your mother for not only giving you life, but for loving and supporting you throughout your life. It’s something that never ends. A good mother loves her children until she draws her last breath on this planet. And if we live our lives with the lessons she taught us, she is always with us.

Just the word “mom” brings forth feelings of warmth and gratitude for all the sacrifices she makes for her children. Good moms teach, yes, but their children also learn through the nurturing ways of her example.

If you’re wondering what to give your mom, if you’re fortunate enough to still have one, don’t sweat the small things. Don’t worry about flowers or candy or whatever. While things are appreciated, the very best gift you can give your mother is your time, if possible. Go to visit with her, give her a big hug, and settle in for a good, long visit, perhaps over lunch or dinner. She will appreciate your company far more than any physical gift that you have to offer. If she lives too far away for a personal visit, then make sure you send a loving card and be sure to call her on her special day, or Skype.

And for those whose mother has already gone to her great award in Heaven, you can still honor her on Mothers’ Day. Talk about her with your dad, if he’s still here, and your siblings, and her friends. Remember the good times and share them — together. It will bring you all closer, to her and to each other.

We wish all the moms a very Happy Mothers’ Day on Sunday, and every day. You make the world go ‘round. We salute you.
