AMERICUS — The Americus and Sumter County Chamber of Commerce presented a $1,000 Platinum Trustee Scholarship to Minh Nguyen of Leslie, a South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) General Equivalency Diploma (GED) graduate, who recently received his diploma.
Jimmy Whaley, vice chair of the Americus Sumter Chamber of Commerce board, presented Nguyen with the Platinum Trustee Scholarship in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on the South Georgia Tech campus recently. Nguyen thanked the Chamber of Commerce for the scholarship and for their support of the South Georgia Tech GED students.
The Platinum Trustee Scholarship is part of the Chamber’s initiative to support education in Sumter County. The scholarship is awarded annually by the Platinum Trustees to an individual graduating from a school in Sumter County or receiving a GED in Sumter County with plans to attend SGTC or Georgia Southwestern State University.
Minh Nguyen was nominated for the scholarship by the SGTC Adult Education department and his instructors John Bagwell and Angie Kauffman, following his outstanding score on the GED test.
Nguyen is currently studying electrical systems technology at SGTC. He was enrolled in both the GED program and electrical systems technology. He has completed the first year of the electrical systems technology program. Nguyen is only the third member of his family to attend college. His son and daughter were the first two and they are both currently enrolled at Yale.
“We are grateful to the Chamber of Commerce and the Platinum Trustees for providing this scholarship to a very deserving individual,” said SGTC President John Watford. “This is a great way to encourage and support higher education in this community.”
