AMERICUS – On Sunday afternoon, October 20, the Georgia Southwestern State University women’s soccer team wanted to send seniors Michelle Gustavsen, Alison Rugel, Brenna Mendonca and Kaily Short out on a high note with a win over Peach Belt Conference (PBC) opponent Young Harris College (YHC) on Senior Day at GSW. Unfortunately, though they battled vigorously throughout regulation and through two overtime periods, the Lady Hurricanes came out on the short end as YHC’s Eline Sand was able to score in the 104th minute to give the Lady Mountain Lions a 1-0 win.

Before the match, GSW held a pre-game ceremony for all four of the seniors on the team. Each of them was celebrated as all four of them are finishing their careers as student-athletes at GSW.

GSW freshman forward Payton Johnson led the Lady Hurricanes (3-9-1, 0-6 PBC) with five shots. Three of those shots were sent towards goal. Junior midfielder Leila Hamed recorded three shots on the day and sophomore forward Eduarda Giusti tallied two shots. GSW sophomore Hannah Morrone was six minutes shy of getting a shutout. Morrone recorded seven saves on the afternoon.

With the win, YHC improves to 5-6 overall and 4-2 in the PBC.

The Lady Hurricanes will try to earn their first PBC win of the season when they host the #4 ranked team in the nation, the Lady Saints of Flagler College, on Wednesday, October 23, at 7 p.m.
