Visitor Center to offer African-American History Tour

The Americus Visitor Center will offer its first of three African-American History Tours starting today. Other dates for the tours are Saturday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 29.

     Tickets are on sale now. The cost for the tours is $10 for adults. Children under age 12 are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased in advance, but also will be sold the day of the tour.

The tours, aboard the Americus Trolley, will begin at the Visitor Center, 101 W. Lamar St., at 2 p.m. They typically last one hour.

The tours are a kickoff for Black History Month. Sites visited will include the old Americus Institute; Eastview Cemetery; Americus Colored Hospital; Friendship Baptist Church; Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church; and the Sumter County Courthouse grounds, among others.

Civil rights movement court cases; prominent African-Americans with Americus ties; significant church histories; as well as education histories will all be referenced.
