Sumter County Schools to be closed until May 4

The SCBE, in reaction to Governor Brian Kemp’s executive order to close all public elementary and secondary schools in Georgia until Monday, April 27 due to the COVID-19 crisis, has decided to keep all Sumter County Public Schools closed until Monday, May 4 due to the fact that Spring Break in Sumter County is scheduled to begin on April 27 and run through May 1. AMERICUS – On Thursday, March 26, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp issued Executive Order 03.26.20.02 closing all public elementary and secondary schools for in-person instruction through Friday, April 24. Students may return to school for in-person instruction on Monday, April 27.
However, Sumter County School Superintendent Torrance Choates, Ed.D. has stated that all Sumter County Public Schools will remain closed to in-person instruction until Monday, May 4. This is due to the fact that Spring Break in Sumter County runs from Monday, April 27 to Friday, May 1.
