Tornado Watch in effect for Americus, Sumter County and surrounding counties

AMERICUS – The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Americus and Sumter County, as well as 51 other counties throughout Central, East Central and West Central Georgia.

This tornado watch is in effect until 4 p.m. this afternoon.

Other surrounding counties included in this tornado watch are Crisp, Dooly, Schley, Marion, Bibb, Taylor, Webster, Macon, Muscogee, Stewart, Chattahoochee, Webster, Upson, Crawford, Lamar, Peach and Houston counties.

Surrounding cities that are listed in this tornado watch include Cordele, Vienna, Buena Vista, Ellaville, Butler, Columbus, De Soto, Cobb, Leslie, Plains, Montezuma, Macon, Fort Valley, Fort Benning, Preston, Richland, Butler, Thomaston, Barnesville, Abbeville, Warner Robins and Roberta.

A Tornado Watch is issued when weather conditions in a certain region are conducive for a tornado to appear in that region. A Tornado Warning is issued when a tornado is spotted heading towards a particular area.
