Todd Vickery named Principal of Sumter County Middle School

Americus, Ga. — The Sumter County Board of Education has voted to hire Mr. Todd Vickery, Assistant Principal at Americus Sumter High School to serve as the new principal for Sumter County Middle School for the 2020-2021 school year.

Vickery, who has been an educator since 1995, all of which has been in the Sumter County district, will replace Mae Mills who is leaving Sumter Middle.

“I have been very pleased with Mr. Todd Vickery’s leadership. He will bring added discipline, organization, and structure to Sumter County Middle School.  I am sure that he will do a good job,” Superintendent Dr. Torrance Choates said.

Vickery has served as one of the assistant principals at Americus High School since 2014-15. Prior to that he served as the Health/P.E. teacher at both SCMS and 9th Grade Academy. He also served at ASHS as the Graduation Coach, Credit Recovery Specialist, Athletic Director, Baseball Coach, PASS Site Coordinator, Program Director for 21st Century Learning Center. He began his teaching career in 1995 in the Bibb County School System at McEvoy Middle School as a Health and P.E. teacher, and coached football, wrestling, and baseball at McEvoy and Southwest High School during that time.

“I am excited about the opportunity to serve as principal of SCMS,” said Vickery. “I am looking forward to working with the faculty, staff, students, and parents to prepare our students to be successful in high school and beyond.”

Vickery holds a BS in Health and Physical Education., from Georgia Southwestern College in 1995.  He earned his Master’s degree in Education from Georgia Southwestern State University in 2003 and his Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Columbus State University in 2018. Mr. Vickery received the Bibb County’s PAGE teacher of the year in 95-96 and was the 2008 Volunteer of the year by the Community Development Division of the Chamber of Commerce for promoting education awareness while serving as Graduation Coach and helping Sumter County become a Work Ready Certified Community.
