When Rosalynn Carter returned home after the White House, she became concerned about the lack of support she saw for family and friends caring for their loved ones. She answered that need by founding the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers, the first national center to focus attention on supporting family caregivers. During my 20-year career there, I saw firsthand how hard she worked to ensure that caregivers in Sumter County and around the world have access to the best possible training programs to enhance their quality of life and that of the person they were caring for. She understood firsthand that caregivers are the true backbone of our nation’s long-term care system. The multitudes of caregivers helped by her foresight is immeasurable. I am forever grateful for her caring compassion towards alleviating the suffering of others in everything she did.
