Rosalynn Carter Motorcade to Begin at Phoebe Sumter Public Encouraged to Line the Route

Americus, Ga. – Several days of public ceremonies celebrating the life for former First Lady Rosalynn Carter will begin Monday morning in Americus at the campus of Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.

“Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter was a bright and shining star in our country and our community. She was a passionate supporter of many important issues and a compassionate advocate for many often-overlooked people. Her commitment to raising awareness about mental health issues and supporting caregivers was unmatched,” said Carlyle Walton, Phoebe Sumter CEO. “The Phoebe Sumter Family is honored that Mrs. Carter entrusted us with her healthcare on many occasions, and we join our community in mourning her passing and celebrating her legacy.”

The Carter family motorcade will arrive on the Phoebe Sumter campus from Plains at 10:25 a.m. on Monday. Mrs. Carter’s remains will be transferred to a hearse, accompanied by past and present members of her U.S. Secret Service detail. At 10:40 a.m., the motorcade will depart Phoebe Sumter before heading to Georgia Southwestern State University and on to The Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta.

“We are exceedingly grateful that Phoebe Sumter will be the starting point for these public ceremonies. We are honored to host this historic event as the Phoebe Family says goodbye to a wonderful woman and beloved public servant who supported our community, the Phoebe Sumter team and people around the world with grace and humility,” Walton said.

The Highway 280 entrance to the Phoebe Sumter campus will be closed from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Monday. All physician offices on the campus will also be closed during that time.

The public is invited to pay respects along the motorcade route, which includes the Highway 280 entrance road to Phoebe Sumter. The public may park in and view the motorcade from the pecan grove on the east side of that entrance road. Signage will direct people to the parking area from Highway 280. Media wishing to cover the motorcade on the Phoebe Sumter campus should arrive and check in by 6:45 a.m.
