TIFTON – The Sumter County 12U All Star football team went down to Tifton and brought back a state championship for Sumter County, as they defeated Peach County 33-0 in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) state championship game back on Saturday, December 9.
To get to that game, they had to earn some tough victories in the regionals back on December 2 and 3. They defeated Effingham County 37-8 and then defeated Glenn County 14-0.
However, before they could compete in the regionals, they had to win their district tournament, which took place back on the weekend of November 15 and 16. Back then, they defeated Bainbridge by the score of 38-0 and then defeated Lee County 25-24 in the district championship.
“I’d like to thank the coaches for inspiring the players with words of encouragement and motivation,” said Dwight Harris, Athletic Director for the Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department (SCPRD). “They got the best effort from each player not by lighting a fire beneath them, but by building a fire within them.
Whether the light switch was on in every room or not, I’m not sure, but I am absolutely sure that the Panthers were lit. Sumter County, our future is still shining bright.”
