Mrs. Mary Janis Dixon Baldwin, age 84, passed away peacefully at her residence on December 30, 2023. A service honoring her life will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery on January 3, 2024, at 1:00 P.M. Friends are invited to pay their respects at her residence, 126 Woodvalley Road, on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 from 3:00 until 7:00 PM.
Janis was born on May 21, 1939, in Americus, GA, born to James Dixon and Mary Lou Williams Dixon. She graduated from Americus High School in 1957 and pursued higher education at Georgia Southwestern and Valdosta State University, where she graduated in 1962 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. She taught as a middle-grade educator in Atlanta and Americus. On August 18, 1963, she married George Ray Baldwin. They shared a lifetime of love together until his passing in January 2022.
Following the arrival of her children, Janis devoted herself wholeheartedly to homemaking, finding profound joy in caring for her loved ones. Janis was a devoted spouse, a best friend to her sisters, and a nurturing mother and grandmother. She was a constant presence at her children and grandchildren’s sports events and activities, offering steadfast support. Her life epitomized selflessness, dedication to family, and a gentle spirit.
Growing up, Janis was a member of First United Methodist Church before joining First Baptist Church of Americus after marriage. There, she actively participated in the Charlie Gibbs Sunday School Class, contributed to the Woman’s Missionary Union, taught Vacation Bible School, and served in the Nursery. Beyond her church commitments, Janis was a member of the Hat ‘n Hoe Garden Club and loved playing bridge with her friends in the bridge club. She relished moments spent antiquing, indulged in novels by her beloved authors, and loved traveling to reunite and spend time with her sisters.
Mrs. Baldwin is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Raymond Baldwin (Kim) of Leslie and her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Baldwin Wall (Chris) of Americus and her three grandsons, George Alan Wall, James Baldwin Wall and Asa Ray Baldwin. She is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Sheila Grubbs (Jimmy) of Memphis, TN a sister-in-law, Norma Baldwin of Americus and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, George Ray Baldwin and a sister and brother-in-law Beth and David Miller. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Janis’ caregivers, Rosemary Sims, Reatha Willis, Rosalynn Adams, Elaine Jones, and Carol Hartage, for their unwavering love and attentive care.
