AMERICUS – Behind the stellar pitching performance of starting pitcher Travis Pennington, the Southland Academy Baseball Team (SAR) rolled their way to a 7-0 shutout victory over Brookwood (BKW) Tuesday afternoon at the Southland Academy baseball complex.

In seven scoreless innings of work, Pennington only gave up two hits with two walks and he struck out six batters.

“Travis did a really good job today,” SAR Head Coach Blaze Hargrove said. “He attacked the zone, threw a lot of strikes and the defense made some plays. We still have a lot of work to do. We still have to clean some things up defensively and in the box. I’m super proud of our start. It’s a good way to start, a good building step. Hopefully, we can keep going in the right direction.”

In total, the Raiders scored seven runs on 10 hits and committed two errors, while the Warriors went scoreless with just two hits and they committed three errors.

The Raiders scored their first two runs in the bottom of the first inning on two hits. After Mac McMichael reached on an error to lead off the frame, Luke Tarrer doubled to left field, putting runners at second and third with no outs. Perry Usher then singled home McMichael and Tarrer would later score on an error by the BKW second baseman.

Then in the bottom of the third, the Raiders took advantage of two walks and a hit batsman. SAR would load the bases before Trey Sellers drew an RBI walk, scoring Cohen Rogers from third. At this point, SAR had a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Raiders would add another run on an RBI single by Will Godwin. Then in the bottom of the fifth, SAR added two more runs on three hits to take a 6-0 lead.

The Raiders added their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. With runners at first and third with two outs, courtesy runner Jackson Webb scored on an error by the BKW catcher.

Will Godwin and Perry Usher each went 2 for 3 at the plate with an RBI and Luke Tarrer went 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.

The Raiders (3-1) will travel down to Brookwood on Friday for a rematch with the Warriors. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
