Lady Hurricanes advance to third round of NCAA Tournament with win over Catawba

SALISBURY, NC – The Georgia Southwestern State University women’s basketball team (GSW) jumped out to a 24-12 lead in the first quarter and did not let up on their way to an 88-63 thrashing of Catawba College in the second round of the NCAA Division II National Tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Hurricanes had a much more difficult time in the first round the day before, as they defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 62-59 in overtime.

Four Lady Hurricanes scored in double figures in the win over CC. Jashanti Simmons led GSW in scoring with 27 points and Kayla Langley poured in 20. Ndidiamaka Ndukwe had 18 points and Destiny Garrett chipped in 13 points in the winning cause.

The Lady Hurricanes (28-3) will face the Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman University at Catawba College in the third round of the tournament Monday night at 7:30 p.m.

In the first meeting between these two teams back in November, the Lady Hurricanes defeated CNU 62-58 in the GSW Classic.
