AMERICUS – After five innings of play, the Georgia Southwestern State University Baseball Team (GSW) was tied with West Georgia at 3-3, but the Wolves scored six runs on five hits in the top of the sixth inning and would go on to defeat the Hurricanes by the score of 10-5 on Tuesday at Hurricane Field.

“It’s a mid week game that you give yourself a chance to win. I guess they had a big inning and we weren’t able to bounce back,” GSW Head Coach Josh McDonald said. “I give those guys credit for staying with it and pitching it well. We’ve just got to do a better job of playing defense and all phases of the game.”

Another factor that contributed to the loss was the three errors committed by the Hurricanes in this game.

Jake Blinstrub and Matthew Manuel both led the Hurricanes’ offensive attack. Blinstrub went 3 for 3 at the plate with an RBI and Manuel went 4 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs.

Joseph Roden took the loss for the Hurricanes (1-2). In one inning of work, he gave up six runs on five hits and struck out two.

The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Blinstrub drove in Paul Hegeman, but UWG responded with a run in the top of the third when Michael Rich drove in Cooper Prince on an RBI single.

The Hurricanes regained the lead in the bottom of the third when George Davis drove in Brant Deerman on a single up the middle, but the Wolves countered with two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.

GSW redshirt junior pitcher Grant Adams gave up a run on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts in the Hurricanes’ loss to West Georgia.

The Hurricanes tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth on a home run by Matthew Manuel, but in the top of the sixth, the Wolves would explode for six runs on five hits to take a 10-3 lead.

GSW tried to make a comeback in the bottom of the ninth and scored two runs, but the comeback bid fell short and the Hurricanes went on to lose by the score of 10-5.

The loss puts the Hurricanes at 25-10 overall and they are 9-6 in the Peach Belt Conference. They will step back into PBC play when they head down to St. Augustine, FL this weekend for a three-game series with Flagler College. First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m.
