Usher’s walk-off double lifts Raiders to victory against Terrell Academy

AMERICUS – It came down to the bat of senior Perry Usher. With runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the seventh of a 3-3 ball game, Usher belted a line drive double into left field, scoring Trey Sellers and giving the Southland Academy Raiders (SAR) a 4-3 walk-off victory over Terrell Academy on Tuesday at Southland Academy.
The Raiders were trailing the Eagles 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh. Fletcher Taylor led off the frame with a single and would later advance to second on a passed ball. After Cohen Rogers struck out for the first out, Trey Sellers tied the game with an RBI double to right field. Mac McMichael followed that up with a single, setting the stage for Usher’s walk-off double.
Usher went 2 for 4 at the plate with the walk-off RBI and Will Godwin went 2 for 3 at the plate with a run scored to lead the Raiders’ offense.
Southland Academy starting pitcher Travis Pennington gave up a run on three hits, walked five and struck out seven batters in the Raiders’ win over Terrell Academy.

Travis Pennington got the start on the mound for the Raiders. In six innings of work, he gave up a run on three hits, walked five and struck out seven.
The Raiders got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning. McMichael reached on an error to lead things off and Will Godwin would later single to put runners on first and third with one out. Godwin then stole second and McMichael stole home to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, Luke Tarrer hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed Godwin to score and the Raiders were up 2-0.
It was a pitchers’ duel for the next four innings and neither team could score runs during that time. However, the Eagles would score their first run of the game in the top of the sixth. With two men on and no outs, Kade Muliford drove in a run on an RBI double. Then in the top of the seventh, Muliford would drive in two runs on another RBI double to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
However, that lead would not last long, as the Raiders would score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn the 4-3 victory.
The win puts SAR at 9-4 overall and they are in third place in the GIAA Region 3-AAA standings at 4-2.
The Raiders will travel over to Dawson on Friday for a rematch with Terrell Academy. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
